Ever considered a career in the food and drink manufacturing industry?
Well it’s definitely worth thinking about if you want a career that is stimulating, innovative and fast-moving.
The food and drink sector is the UK’s largest manufacturing sector, accounting for 16% of the UK’s total manufacturing sector, employing 400,000 people directly in the UK, and as many as 1.2 million in related food services.
Despite the food and drink sector being the biggest manufacturing sector in the UK, and one of the largest food and drink manufacturing industry in the world, the sector is certainly not complacent. Consumers are more concerned than ever about healthy eating, therefore the industry needs to attract the right people into the sector, now and in the future, who have the appropriate skills and attitude to cope with the growing demands of the public, both at home and globally, to produce food that is safe and of good quality.
The industry’s prospects are good, with the sector continuing to grow, even despite the recent downturn. However, its future sustainability is highly dependent on the skills of its current workforce and crucially, its ability to attract the right talent for the future. Current figures show that by 2017 the sector will require 137,000 new recruits, 45,000 will be for managerial roles and professional occupations (33%).
To help address this issue, FDF is running the ‘Taste Success – A Future in Food’ campaign. Launched last year, Taste Success aims to change the image of working in the industry which was perceived as being boring, low-paid and all about ‘hairnets and wellies’, and to promote the sector as a great career option.
The campaign has several strands, including a digital presence on Facebook and YouTube, where viewers can vote for their sexiest foods and watch three fun videos such as ‘Chili Baby’, highlighting some of the great jobs that people do in the industry. The campaign also features numerous real life case studies from talented and skilled employees who have managed to secure good jobs within the sector.

An employment tribunal has upheld a company’s dismissal of an employee that posted lewd comments about a co-worker on the social network, Facebook. The employee in question posted several comments regarding a fellow employee that was viewed, and reported, by another colleague who was in his circle of friends on the social network.
After deliberating the issue, the company decided upon dismissing the employee based on grounds of sexual harassment.
Employees must be wary of writing anything that can be deemed as harassment or bullying of colleagues, not only on social networking sites several other avenues, listed below.
- Sending offensive or threatening emails to a colleague, especially where that person has asked you to stop
- Texting or tweeting
- Sharing a person’s private data online
- Bombarding someone with emails where previous email approaches have been rejected. This can happen where a superior is placing unrealistic expectations on another employee, leading to the distress of that employee, and can amount to cyber bullying in extreme cases
An advantage in dealing with cyber bullying over traditional bullying is that it occurs in a public domain and is not easily hidden. Text messages, tweets, emails and blog posts can often be traced, even if the bully posts anonymous comments.

A Court ruling on Wednesday has opened up a huge debate of whether a firm can enforce a retirement policy if deemed as a ‘public interest’. The case between a City Law firm and an employee has created fear and doubts in he minds of many people across the nation and has sparked a huge debate.
The City Law firm’s policy of forcing partners to retire at the age of 65 years to ‘make way’ for younger employees was upheld in the ruling.
The judgment stated that where the reasons for retiring someone met “public policy” objectives it was acceptable to force someone to leave the business.
Many will disagree that age is not cause for forcing retirement but others do suggest that the ruling is logical; If a person is an ‘up and coming star’ then they should have the ability to develop within the ranks of the employer OR the employer will stand to have their business affected by the exit of a valued asset of the business, which in effect will detriment the business.
At a time of high youth unemployment, it is in the public interest for older staff to leave to open up jobs for younger people, the judgment signalled.
Lady Hale, said: “Improving the recruitment of young people, in order to achieve a balanced and diverse workforce, is in principle a legitimate aim. But if there is in fact no problem in recruiting the young and the problem is in retaining the older and more experienced workers then it may not be a legitimate aim for the business concerned.”
Tom Flanagan, partner at Irwin Mitchell, which represented Age UK in the Supreme Court, said it was not acceptable simply for an employer to say it wished to retire older workers on the grounds of cost – it being too expensive to keep over-65s at work – because there was no real public interest argument in that case.
However, if an employer combined cost and promoting younger staff as the two main reasons for a retirement age, there was nothing in theory stopping them from implementing forced retirement, he said

All-girls’ schools could lose a quarter of their British pupils as parents decide they’re no longer suitable for preparing their daughters for the modern world of ‘men, marriage and career’.
The number of pupils attending same sex schools belonging to the renowned Girls’ Schools Association has already dropped by 1.4 per cent in the last year.
And Lord Lucas, editor of The Good Schools Guide, has claimed all-girls’ schools need to ‘up their game’ to compete with the growing preference towards mixed classrooms.
He warned that girls’ schools that did not change with the times by improving their curriculum to emphasise subjects such as science and engineering – traditionally seen as remit of men – they risk losing a quarter of pupils in the next 20 years.
Lord Lucas told the Daily Telegraph: ‘Schools need to give positive reasons to choose a girls’ school.
‘The old reason that without boys they can concentrate may be true for some girls, but most girls who grow up in a co-educational environment do pretty well and find they can manage quite happily.
‘I question the old traditional arguments in favour of a girls’ school and I’d like to see something more fundamental and evidence-based and that would make a real difference to the choices parents make.’

His statement has come under fire by heads of all-girls’ schools who claim single sex schools are not going out of fashion and it is Lord Lucas’ views that are in fact ‘old-fashioned’.
Helen Wright, head of St Mary’s School in Calne, Wiltshire, told the Daily Telegraph: ‘It is an old fashioned attitude. He seems to have an idea of girls’ schools that they are convent-style establishments from the 19th century.’
All-boys’ schools are also seeing a decline with many fee-paying establishments changing their admission rules to accpet girls as well.
Today less than five per cent of schools listed in last year’s edition of The Good Schools Guide were all-boys’ schools compared to a quarter in the 1980s.

Well it’s definitely worth thinking about if you want a career that is stimulating, innovative and fast-moving – and FDF’s new Careers Campaign aims to point you in the right direction. ‘Taste Success – A Future in Food’ is FDF’s Careers Campaign and it aims to show potential entrants that the UK food and drink manufacturing sector is a ‘career of first choice’. The food and drink sector is the UK’s largest manufacturing sector, accounting for 16% of the UK’s total manufacturing sector, employing 400,000 people directly in the UK, and as many as 1.2 million in related food services. Despite the food and drink sector being the biggest manufacturing sector in the UK, and one of the largest food and drink manufacturing industry in the world, the sector is certainly not complacent. Consumers are more concerned than ever about healthy eating, therefore the industry needs to attract the right people into the sector, now and in the future, who have the appropriate skills and attitude to cope with the growing demands of the public, both at home and globally, to produce food that is safe and of good quality.
Key objectives of the campaign will be to:
- promote the food and drink manufacturing sector as a viable career of first choice for school leavers and graduates;
- dispel the myth that the food and drink sector is outdated by showing young people that the sector is leading the way in regards to scientific and technological innovation, research and development;
- show young people that by obtaining internationally recognised, accredited qualifications and training opportunities there is a wealth of long-term career opportunities available to them in the sector;
- address the current skills gaps in the food and drink manufacturing sector that will need to be filled if the UK food and drink industry is to compete, not only at a national level but on a global scale, particularly in the areas of food science and technology.
Current figures show that by 2017 the sector will require 137,000 new recruits, 45,000 will be for managerial roles and professional occupations (33%). Therefore a key aim of the campaign will be to inform young people, careers advisors and parents that a career in our sector is a good long-term career option.

Our campaign will aspire to engage young people and show them that by becoming the food scientists and food technologists of the future, they can enjoy a rewarding career with lots of exciting opportunities, as well as play a pivotal role in ensuring that there is a skilled and suitably qualified workforce in the ever competitive and highly developed UK food sector. The food and drink manufacturing sector is certainly one to be proud of, and this campaign aims to prove that. The ‘Taste Success – A Future in Food’ campaign will champion the sector and highlight to stakeholders, including business, government and the media, the positive contribution that the food and drink industry makes to society.
